UNDERSTANDING THE FLEA
For millions of pets and people, the tiny flea is a remorseless enemy. The flea is a small, brown, wingless insect that uses specialized mouthparts to pierce the skin and siphon blood.
When a flea bites your cat, it injects a small amount of saliva into the skin to prevent blood coagulation.

Dental Health
Dental Health month is just around the corner, but preventative care is never too late. Most dogs and cats should have there teeth examined thoroughly and routinely starting at the age of 3. Some pets are more prone to issues with their teeth and it important that their teeth are not ignored. Oral disease can lead to tooth decay or loss and can also cause kidney, liver, lung and heart problems.
Common signs of oral disease are:
*Yellow-brown tarter near the gum line
*Red, swollen or bleeding gums
*Persistent bad breath
*Abnormal drooling
*Difficulty eating or loss of appetite
A dental cleaning consists of putting the pet under general anesthesia and the use of an ultrasonic dental cleaner. Bacteria and tarter are cleaned from underneath the gum line. Antibiotics are routinely used due to the amount of bacteria stirred up during a cleaning.
Please contact our staff with any questions about dental health or to schedule an appointment for a dental cleaning.
Treats
There has been many reports on the news about problems with dog treats. We at the Lorain Animal Clinic recommend feeding only treats that are currently made in the USA. Though the FDA has not said definitively that the treats from China are harmful, there have been reports of problems with them. If you are feeding treats from China, discontinue and watch your pet for any signs of vomiting, diarrhea, or lethargy.
Other alternatives that can be used are fresh carrots, apples, green beans, bananas, and peppers. NEVER feed grapes or raisins.
Please contact our staff if you have any questions concerning your pets treats.
Fleas
Yes, we are still seeing fleas!! Until we have 6 days in a row of HEAVY frost or a really good snow, we will continue to see these pests! Make sure you keep your pets on the preventative to keep the fleas away. Flea season is typically from April to November but the fleas are active anytime it is above 50 degrees. We have had many days above 50 degrees so far this winter so keep up the prevention!!
If you are experiencing a flea problem make sure you are treating ALL pets in your house AND the environment. It can take 3 to 4 months of diligence to remove these pests.
